Duck Dynasty Didactics

ddFor those untouched by the force that is Duck Dynasty, it is a show about a group of rednecks (they love this title) who also happen to be millionaires having invented a popular line of duck calls.  This show chronicles their daily redneck adventures in and out of the office (mostly out).

Overall, it is a fun show and one that does not feel the need to be edgy in any way.  In fact, every show ends with a prayer about the things that happened that day.  One thing I have been impressed with is the way that all of the family members are always teaching the young members of the family.  In every situation, they are teaching.  Sometime the lesson is how to dress a duck (non-rednecks:  that means getting it ready to eat not to go out)  and other times it is about how to live in marriage or take care of one another.  We would do well to follow this example.  Instead of just looking for particular teachable moments or setting aside time to talk about specific subject, we should always be teaching the younger generations.  This is particularly true when it comes to the faith.  We must set aside times to teach (Worship, Bible Study, Daily Prayer and Catechesis).  But just as importantly, we must always be teaching.  Every moment is by its nature teachable.

Deuteronomy 6:6-7  And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart.  You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.

The world and its prince are constantly teaching the younger generations.  They do it through peers, music, TV shows, and movies.  And their didactics lead to death. We need to place our young people constantly before the words and truth of God.  For when the Spirit teaches, forgiveness and life is the result.  If you have time with children, you should be teaching, teaching the truth of God.  Do it the Duck Dynasty way.  Forget that.  Do it the Jesus way.

  1. Apparently Phil Robertson is an elder at the Church of Christ and one of his other sons (Alan) is the pastor there.
