“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”
Psalm 109:105
I would suggest to you that every Christian should have three kinds of time with the Word in their life. First, there should be individual time spent reading and meditating upon the Word. Then there would be some sort of group time spent studying and discussing the Word with fellow Christians, preferably led or directed by a pastor. And finally of course, there would be church time spent listening and reflecting on the Word read and proclaimed. If any of these types of time in the Word are missing in your life, I would suggest that you give attention to it and find ways to have all three in your life.  Not in order to make me happy or to fulfill some new law that I made up, but simply because the Spirit has worked in you a faith that knows that God’s Word is the only lamp to guide our feet otherwise so prone to stray.
The Word of God is to be our joy and our focus. But all too often our joy gets misplaced and our focus gets blurred. Yes church attendees, bible study goers, and yes even pastors, all fall short of the glory of God and do not give the word the place in our life that it should have.  Thanks be to God that Jesus’ feet were led all the way to the cross to pay for our sins, even our neglect of his Word. Yes , the very Word we sometimes ignore brings us the good news of our forgiveness and salvation. It gives us peace with God. And it also gives us feet that walk in the paths of righteousness. And then we can say with the psalmist, “Your testimonies are my heritage forever, for they are the joy of my heart. I incline my heart to perform your statutes forever, to the end.â€
