Is your intolerance killing people?

In case you have missed it, the LGBT community has a new tactic in their campaign to silence anyone speaking out against homosexuality. What is the tactic? They contend that when someone says homosexuality is wrong, homosexuals will kill themselves. Yes, with this tactic, they craft what the see as intolerance into a murder weapon.

The article below notes this response posited in response to the LDS (Mormon) ((I do not mean to endorse Mormonism in any way. But on this particular issue they happen, even despite the false doctrine present throughout their teaching, to be speaking in concert with biblical truth)) leader proclaiming at a recent conference that regardless of whether people are born with a tendency to homosexual thoughts or not, such thoughts and the attendant deeds are sinful, and in need of redemption. He contended (*gasp*) that God could display victory even over this sin in the person’s live, delivering them to a new life of righteousness. Such speech they claim will end up literally killing those who are embracing such a lifestyle.

One activist said, “You know they will listen to him and believe that what they are doing is wrong.” I hope she is right. I hope they do believe that, turn, be saved, and have a new abundant life with Jesus.

There is no doubt we need to speak the truth with gentleness and respect. We do not need to ever be seen mixing truth with Phelpian antics. But we do speak the truth. Yes, we do it even if in an unfortunate connection, some person tragically takes their life in response to such truth telling. This unfortunate possibility is particularly why we must assure that our message as Christians is not just the law which exposes sin and causes despair but also carries with it the message of the gospel which removes despair and gives hope.

Utah gay activists protest Mormon church remarks

Gay rights activists lay on the sidewalk in front of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' church office building Thursday, Oct. 7, 2010, i

SALT LAKE CITY – Gay rights activists staged a silent protest Thursday outside the headquarters of the Mormon church in Salt Lake City in response to a church leader’s remarks that homosexuality is an immoral condition that can and should be overcome.

In his remarks Packer said some would argue that gays “were pre-set and cannot overcome what they feel are inborn tendencies toward the impure and unnatural. Not so! Why would our Heavenly Father do that to anyone?”

Activists nationwide have called Packer’s remarks hurtful and say they ostracize gay church members and can lead some to consider or attempt suicide.

  1. I don’t know… I think people are killing themselves because they are desperate and hopeless. I think the church needs to continue to be bold in speaking the truth (which the LCMS is good at), but we also need to be better and giving the *whole* biblical truth. We say “Homosexuality is wrong” and usually stop there, when almost every time it’s mentioned in the bible, it’s followed by the gospel of how God has the ability to change/restore/heal. We need to be actively bringing the second part of the message to people in a loving way.

  2. In other words, our truth is a very different truth from the “God Hates Fags” group and the intolerant-just-because folk. We need to speak out against homosexuality – *and* hate crimes *and* folks who twist the truth. We need to speak out for a loving, holy, healing God.
