Weiner Politicians

Okay.  That title is the the most reserved of all of the word plays on a man’s unfortunate name I have thought of over the last several days.  I am somewhat proud that I have not filled my Facebook status with more.  Perhaps slowly, I am maturing.

imageI watched today as a politician stood before a microphone and admitted that just days before he had spit lie after lie into the same microphone.  He, though a newlywed, had been sending explicit messages to other women.  But what frustrated me most was his firm stance that he would not step down from his post because as far as he could tell he had not broken any laws or done anything that stood against his oath to the U.S. Constitution.

He may be right that he did nothing that legally demands his resignation.  But what ever happened to honor?  What ever happened to a man being shamed by the exposing of his poor character?  What ever happened to the idea that one’s character was what afforded them the opportunity to lead and when it was proved absent, the person resigned for the sake of the honor of the office?

Whatever happened to whoever is given much much is expected?

You know what I want in a politician?  A leader.  You know what I want in a leader?  A person of character.

No Newt.  I will not vote for you.  I have watched you time and time again not take full responsibility for your adultery of many years ago.  You make excuse after excuse.  I do not care how many references you make to God and America.

No Anthony. I do not think you should remain.  I have watched you lie with such ease that I must believe this to be consistent with your character.  The law may not demand your exit.  But your conduct does.   It is not that you did something specifically in contradiction to your oath.  It is that an oath made by one who lies with ease holds little value.
