Living Without a Pulse

I have realized that most of my posts are argumentative in nature.  I do not apologize for that because such correction is needed and given to my vocation.  However, I do intend to try to write more devotional material here for my people and others that care to read it.  To that end:

imageI get Popular Science magazine.  In the most recent issue there was a lengthy article on a new artificial heart being produced.  It is an extension of the device Former VP Dick Cheney has installed to work half of his heart.  Interestingly enough, this device is revolutionary because unlike all other devices before, it does not try to simulate the pulse of the heart.  It simply pushes blood constantly through the body.  People are living, quite literally, without a pulse.

To me, this is certainly also true spiritually.  Many, even most people, are walking around living without a pulse.  What do I mean?  They appear very alive to the outside eyes.  Perhaps they are even alive in the way people speak about people being “full of life.”  They are active and even appear happy.  The trouble is that many of them do not have a pulse.  Their life is not natural.  It is manufactured.

If you get in close enough to them, where you can figuratively put your head right onto their chest, you will find out that spiritually they have no pulse.  They do everything without peace and without purpose.  The heart that creates a spiritual pulse in people is missing.  Jesus is not there.

The doctors rejoice that they may be able to physical life without a pulse.  But we can never rejoice that there are people that look alive spiritually but are dead, living without the very thing that gives true life to us all.  We should be grieved by all who are without Jesus.

Jesus said, “The bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world."  May the Spirit open all mouths to say.  "Sir, give us this bread always." May he use us to that end.  Amen.

  1. I’m reminded about the episode in House where Amber and House were in that bus accident, and Amber dies of amantadine poisoning. He heart isn’t working, and the blood is running through a machine.

This also reminds me of how House is without a spiritual guidance, and suffers because of his overly-rational mind.
