Phil,
What translation are you using for the Doxology? It should be greatly improved. The Latin form is: Gloria Patri et Filio et Spiritui Sancto. Sicut erat in principio et nunc et semper et in saecula saeculorum. “Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be and unto the ages of ages.” Why is the “unto the ages of ages” left out? It shouldn’t be and the Greek form has that, too, and I’ve even noticed that certain Greek priests in the Greek archdiocese leave it out as well saying “now and forever. Amen.” Ages of ages does not equal forever. It is an eschatological dimension, not a mere temporal dimension. I’m not sure if this is the standard use of the LCMS, but if it is, whoever is doing your translations really should learn some Greek. Maybe I should teach them.
This is the form given in the order I use, out of our hymnal.
