“Our earth is dying”

I just heard a collage of little kids thought about our new president and what they thought he should do.  Several of the kids said something like the title.  I found that quite disturbing.  People keep their kids from funerals to shield them from possible fear, and then go home or send them to school to be told that the whole earth is dying?  I always thought my generation was full of anxiety.  At least we were not told as toddlers that the whole earth is dying.  Talk about something to fear.

I do believe we are called to be good stewards of this earth, and no doubt there are changes we can make in that direction.  However,  I am always a little skeptical that the same people that can’t accurately tell me what the high temperature will be in two days really know for sure what will happen in 10 or 20 years, not to mention 100.  This is not to question their effort or intelligence, but rather to point out that weather and climate are determined by such a large set of variables that I find it rather arrogant to assume we have them all figured out.

And yet we teach our children that the “earth is dying” as if that is a certain truth.  It is not.
