Prop 8 and and the Urge to Propagate

Proponents of gay/lesbian marriage usually suggest that those that are against it are simply behind the times.  We just don’t get it.  If we had a few more gay friends, we would understand.  But we are all just stuck in little cities and towns without much exposure to homosexuality, and that is the problem.

Well, the point of this post is not to produce a polemic against these points.  Actually in one sense, it is to agree with one thread of this usual argument.  When I listened to the news tonight, I thought.  Maybe they are right.  Maybe the opponents of gay marriage are really behind the time.

At least according to the news report I listened to, the closing arguments in the Proposition 8 lawsuits were made today.  And they said that the main argument the ones arguing for Prop 8 (and therefore against gay marriage) was making was that traditional marriage was the best place for children.  I no doubt agree with this statement, but it seems way behind the times.  Does your typical heterosexual link marriage and children?   Hardly.  More and more children are purposely born outside of marriage all the time.  And those that get married in many cases have not even discussed the idea of having kids.  And those that have discussed it have generally centered their discussion on the question of how long to postpone it.  When you add of the impact of feminism, birth control, and legalized abortion, the link between marriage, sexuality, and children was long ago dismissed by most heterosexuals, let alone the gays.

When we altered the basic understandings of heterosexual marriage (between the late 1800s and now), it was only a matter of time before homosexual marriage came.  If we heterosexuals maintained the traditional connections between marriage, sexuality, and children, we might have a closing argument to make, and children would be at the center of it.  Instead, we just have lawyers who are behind the times in the sense that they are making an argument that only made sense 100 years ago.

For me, I willing to be behind the time, like 6000-10,000 years or so.

Genesis 2:24  Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.

Genesis 1:27-28  So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.  28 And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
