Quick Thoughts on AC Article Twenty-Seven: “Better than Baptism”

This phrase struck  me. The confessors argue that the monks had entered their state with the idea that such a life was “better than baptism.” The underlying premise of the confessors is that nothing is better than Baptism. And how true that is. What is better than God’s saving work through water and word. This applies to what I wrote the other day about those trying to craft a second level of being a Christian with terms like “follower of Jesus.” Essentially, they are claiming a state better than baptism. Better than what God does at the font? Add to the list those who want people to receive the fullness of the Spirit through the laying on of hands. Again, seeking to attain a state better than Baptism. Even those that call people to the altar to decide for Jesus are seeking to suggest that their is something better than Baptism. There is not. It you have that gift, you have it all.
