“Well, we don’t have anything to accomplish”

When did the church become all about function?  Lately, I have heard the above as the reason for canceling many a meeting.  We are busy otherwise, and there is nothing to accomplish immediately, so let’s not meet.  And I must admit that I have not been immune from this thought process.   Busyness has left our society starving for Sabbath.  And so the thought of a canceled  anything brings some relief.

But the groups that have been canceled lately are things like fellowship club and youth groups.  Growing up, I don’t remember ever once going to youth group to accomplish anything.  I went for fellowship.  I went for devotion.  I went for Sabbath (although I would not have called it that back then).

And surely when a group called the fellowship club was formed, they did not form it to accomplish anything except perhaps  the consumption of tasty treats and the sharing of good stories and life experiences.

Why does everything in the church has to be about accomplishing something?  Why does every event has at least a brief meeting attached?  Can we not just gather for fellowship?  Can we not just gather for devotion?  Can we not just gather to Sabbath?

And if we did, wouldn’t more people starving for Sabbath come? Why would any busy person want to join another group looking to accomplish something?  Most of our schedule are filled with such activities.  But if an opportunity simply to rest and spend time with God and his people was offered, might people treasure it? Might people look forward to such a time and be discouraged if it got canceled.

What if we had opportunity to simply gather and enjoy God and his people?  Would you come?
