Nadya Suleman, mother of eight new little ones, has been the subject of much chatter on TV, not to mention the conversations in many living rooms. But it seems to me for all the time spent talking about her, so many things have been overlooked. Almost all of the discussions have centered around the morality and ethics of implanting eight embryos at once. Let me broaden the conversation:
1) What happens if the eight are not implanted? The other babies are frozen, and later discarded. But we don’t want to talk about that because that would raise so many question about in vitro in general, and so many normal couples have placed their fear, love, and trust in this procedure.
2) There is no father involved, well other than whatever he did in some medically sterile room looking at porn. But once again while no doubt this fact has bothered many people, not many have discussed it because thanks to the feminist movement we glorify single mothers, especially those who choose such a lot.
3) This woman has chosen the timing and the number of her children is a very noticeable way. But we do not want to discuss the obvious idolatry involved because so many consider and do the same only on a smaller scale.
4) The connection between sex, marriage, and children. If you do not get it, ask your mom :). But we are much too modern to admit this common sense connection that we have discarded.
Help broaden the discussion. Discuss these things with me. Agree with me. Disagree. Whatever. Just post.
